San Francisco Elopement: Lauryn + Jayd

One of the things I loved when growing up was watching Charlie Brown and the Peanuts Gang. My favorite character? The little red headed girl, of course! Even today, every Christmas, I make it a point to watch the Charlie Brown Christmas special, with that sad little Christmas tree.

When I was in kindergarten, my teacher Mrs. Weiner (yep, that was her name. Gloria Weiner.) showed us a Charlie Brown episode one day during our afternoon graham cracker break. One of my favorite parts of the episode was when Charlie was sitting in the classroom, and he started talking to his teacher. Her responses always sounded like she was talking through a megaphone….”whah whah whah whah whah whah”. I remember Charlie had a crush on his teacher, and he totally thought she had feelings for him, too. Poor kid!

So, what does all this have to do with my latest wedding? Well, Lauryn and Jayd are both teachers. For this reason alone, they are rock stars in my world. After talking to them about their careers, it got me reminiscing about the teachers I had as a kid. While most of them I can’t remember, there are a handful that I will never forget. The impact they made on my life was significant. They encouraged me to push forward when I doubted myself, offered me an ear when no one else would listen, and always reminded me that I indeed was special.

This is what makes Lauryn and Jayd so incredibly awesome. Not only are they committed to making kids’ lives better by signing on for an often-times thankless job, but they have the types of personality and character that their kids WILL remember years down the line. Lauryn and Jayd are so positive, so creative, and laugh more than anyone I’ve met in a long time. After just spending a few hours with them, I felt great. I can only imagine how great their students must feel at the end of the school day.

Teachers are some of the most kind, giving, self-less, dedicated and (of course) smart people around, and Lauryn and Jayd are no different. They embody the qualities that we should all try to cultivate in ourselves on a daily basis. So, thanks Lauryn and Jayd not only for allowing me the honor of documenting your special day, but also for taking me on a pleasant stroll down Memory Lane.

Special thanks goes to my assistant Ryan, who helped out on this wedding. He always gets some great shots. I particularly liked the great shot he captured of Lauryn and Jayd’s shoes (Yes, I know, I’m obsessed with shoes. What’s a girl to do?), and some really lovely portraits of the groom. Go team!

Hi everyone! Welcome to my new blog! I hope you enjoy the new look and feel. I’ll be refining it more over the coming weeks! If you’d still like to visit my old blog, just click here.

And, just for fun, I thought I’d post a few photos I shot this past weekend on our annual visit to the pumpkin patch in Pescadero. What we didn’t realize this year is that the weekend we went was also the annual Halloween Festival. Unfortunately, the roads were jammed with traffic moving at a crawl, and there was no parking (or good pumpkins) at the patch we normally go to. So, we decided to head out of town, when we came across a new pumpkin patch. This one was great…no crowds, plenty of parking, cheaper prices, tons of great pumpkins to choose from, AND they allow dogs. Yipee! As you can see, Otis the pug had a fabulous time at the pumpkin patch in Pescadero.

My Michael Jackson inspired pumpkin. R.I.P. Michael!

I recently had the opportunity to meet a great bunch of people at a recent workshop presented by Lawrence Chan, of Tofurious. This workshop was attended by a small group of talented wedding photographers, wedding photojournalists, portrait photographers, and boudoir photographers from across North America. It was great to be able to learn some new skills, as well as see the work of fellow wedding and portrait photographers. I’m always left feeling inspired and energized after these kinds of workshops. Thanks Lawrence for your great work, and I hope to stay in touch with all the great people I met this day.

To "Yelp" or not to "Yelp"?

Many folks find my company, and other wedding photographers, using the website Yelp.com

So, when a not-so-flattering article printed in the East Bay Express about them, my interested was piqued.

The article is called: “YELP and the Business of Extortion 2.0″ by Kathleen Richards.

Basically, the article exposes the website Yelp.com for removing positive reviews of companies who declined to advertise with them, and then offering to remove negative reviews (for a fee) to other companies.

Over the past 2 years, I’ve received over a dozen positive reviews on Yelp.com from past photography clients (mostly weddings and portraits). However, for some reason, Yelp has removed most of them, even though the reviews and users who posted them do not violate any Terms of Use.

Strangely enough, this started occurring soon after a Yelp advertising representative contacted me about advertising, and I declined.

I emailed Yelp several times about this, and only ever received form letters as a response, never addressing my specific questions or situation. And, my reviews were never re-instated.

The article in the East Bay Express also mentioned another local wedding photographer whose positive reviews started to go missing after she ALSO declined to advertise with Yelp.

I’m a big believer in word of mouth, and referrals based off of recommendation. Many of my clients find me this way, and it’s always been a great way to meet new people and generate new business.

So, like many referral-based websites, I thought Yelp would be such a great resource for matching my company with new clients. However, now I feel that this website is just not playing fair. By choosing to hide legitimate reviews, they are defeating the original purpose of the website.

So, if you’d like to learn more about Rebecca Wilkowski Photography, please don’t rely on the limited reviews posted on Yelp. Instead, please check out the “Kind Words” page on my website, visit Angie’s List.com, or contact me directly. People often ask me, what professional photography organizations do you belong to, and why? Well, here’s a list of all the professional organizations Rebecca Wilkowski Photography belongs to. Here at RWP, we think it’s pretty darn important to maintain these kinds of photography memberships. Wedding and Portrait Photographers International (WPPI)

The National Press Photographers Association is dedicated to the advancement of visual journalism, its creation, practice, training, editing and distribution, in all news media and works to promote its role as a vital public service. Founded in 1946, the NPPA continues to attract the best in news photography, video and multimedia. It is this professional diversity that sets the NPPA apart from other organizations. NPPA encourages visual journalists to reflect high standards of quality in their professional performance and in their personal code of ethics. NPPA vigorously promotes freedom of the press in all its forms. Professional membership in the NPPA is open to all individuals who are working or aspiring towards working in the field of visual journalism.

Editorial Photographers (EP) is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the health and profitability of editorial photography. Their mission is to educate photographers and photography buyers about business issues affecting the industry, and in the process raise the level of business practices in the profession. Working editorial photographers, assistants, students and educators are welcome and encouraged to join.

News Wedding Photographers
Members must have: 1. a minimum of at least two (2) years of editorial photography experience at a professional newspaper (daily or weekly), magazine or as a documentary photographer AND 2. a professional website that showcases one’s photography in a format which is easy to navigate, includes all working links and explains the photographer’s work history.
