Frequently Asked Questions:
What is your style of photography?
My style of photography draws upon my experience as both a newspaper photojournalist and a portrait photographer. My wedding work has been refered to as “artistic”, “photojournalistic” and “candid”. I seek to produce images that move people and capture the essence of the person or place I am photographing. I always try to find new ways of seeing a scene differently.
What’s your approach to wedding photography?
My presence is friendly and unobtrusive, as I believe in letting the day unfold naturally and capturing special moments discreetly whenever possible. I prefer to document the events of the day in a “hands-off” manner, rather than posing people or orchestrating shots, as I believe people are their most beautiful and interesting when they are completely comfortable and able to be themselves.
I spend the entire wedding day with my clients, from the time the bride gets ready to when the couple leaves and the reception ends. I find this helps everyone get more comfortable being around the camera, and me, which results in more natural and genuine photographs.
I take on only a limited number of weddings each year to ensure that each one is truly special. This allows me more time to become acquainted with my clients, understand their needs, and come away with a sense of their personality. My approach allows me to give my clients my full and undivided attention, thereby telling the story of their wedding day in a way that is unique to them.
How long have you been in business?
While I started photographing at the tender age of 10, I have been shooting professionally since 2000. My background is as diverse as the people I’ve come to photograph, and includes freelancing for newspapers, commercial work, portraiture, travel photography and documentary projects. Weddings, however, are my first love…people are my passion!
Have you been published?
Yes. My work has appeared in numerous publications including Today’s Bride, the Knot’s Wedding Style Book, Angie’s List Magazine, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Shutterbug Magazine and others. For a full list of publications, please browse my “Press” page.
Are you available for weddings & events outside of San Francisco?
Yes! I am available to photograph events throughout the US and worldwide. Each year, approximately half of my clients originate from out of the Northern California area.
Do you have any professional memberships or affiliations?
Yes. I am a member of News Wedding Photographers, Wedding and Portrait Photographers International (WPPI), Editorial Photographers (EP), National Press Photographers Association (NPPA), Greeer Photography and Green America’s Green Business Network.
I heard you are a “Green” photographer. What’s that?
My company employs sustainable business practices. This means I make a commitment to reducing, reusing and recycling whenever possible. I also choose to align myself with other organic, fair trade, local, and socially and environmentally responsible vendors. If you’d like to know more about my “green” business practices, please don’t hesitate to ask!
What type of camera do you use?
I use both 35mm film and digital Canon camera outfits. And I always bring back up equipment just in case!
Do you use a wedding assistant?
All weddings with over 50 guests will include an assistant and/or 2nd shooter. My staff handle details such as coordinating people and equipment, as well as capturing additional photojournalistic images with a second camera. This allows the me more time to capture the most important shots and adds even more depth and creativity to your album.
When do I need to book with you?
Booking as far in advance as possible is highly recommended. During peak seasons, I can easily book 6 months to a year in advance.
Do I need to leave a deposit? What is your cancellation/refund policy?
All work requires a deposit of 1/2 to secure a date. The balance is due 2 weeks before the wedding/shoot date. Deposits are refundable on cancellations made with sufficient notice. Cancellations made with less notice will be credited for another date, not to exceed three months from the date of cancellation.
How long before we can see our proofs?
Generally, about 4 to 6 weeks for weddings and 2 weeks for other services. I will always notify the client should the photos be available earlier.
Do I get to keep my negatives?
All clients recieve their negatives or original, unedited high resolution digital files 12 months after their wedding date. Upon request, I will provide the client’s negatives at an earlier date for an additional fee.
