I love couples like Karey & Ben, who spontaneously decide to fly across the country and get married! This cute couple lives in Chicago, so I of course have a special fondness for them.

Like many couples around the globe, Karey & Ben chose the auspicious date of 11-11-11 for their wedding. However, the one thing they didn’t choose was the soggy weather. After some discussion, I encouraged them to embrace the San Francisco Bay Area’s unpredictable weather and move forward with their ceremony in Tilden Park at the East Bay Regional Parks Botanic Garden.

Karey & Ben’s ceremony was intimate, with just a handful of close friends in attendance. They were total troopers and braved the constant down pour of rain for some fun photo ops. One of my favorite moments of the day was when I noticed that everyone had purchased funky matching red and white patterned umbrellas. I immediately knew this would be a great photo!

Karey on Ben:
Ben is a man of actions. Ben will say little but do a lot— he is the first person to offer someone his seat on the bus, help an elderly person cross the street or help me mix ingredients for a charitable bake sale. He is kind and caring and always puts the well being of others (especially those less fortunate) before his own. Ben does the right thing without being asked.

Ben also has an amazing sense of humor. He makes me laugh with his quirky antics—his appetite for pizza and ice cream, unsteadiness on icy sidewalks and theatrical storytelling.

We have been together for 13 years. We have been through the highs and the lows and came out loving each other even more. We really are best friends who share everything. I love and admire Ben, and I can’t wait to see what the next day, month and year have in store for us.

Ben on Karey:
Karey holds herself and her behavior to high standards—a standard of love and an  ethic of honesty, hard work, determination and joy. She has a good heart, is intelligent and open, funny and stunning.

Karey takes action to accomplish her goals. Full of grit and love, she just keeps going. She conscientiously shares her time and work with friends and others alike. The example that Karey sets motivates me to be better. But it is Karey’s love—her smarts, understanding, laughter and humor in the face of both the easy and the arduous—that brings joy  to my life.

I envy couples like Gina and Michael.

This pair was blessed with finding one another, completely by chance. Both knew when they met that the other was “the one”.

Soon after, Gina and Michael made the commitment to journey forward together. They decided to celebrate their love for one another with a wedding, as well as a beautiful baby.

How wonderful to find your soul mate.

How blessed to know so clearly in your heart what you want.

How courageous to follow your bliss.

The Claremont Hotel Club & Spa is a historic hotel at the foot of Claremont Canyon in the Berkeley Hills in Berkeley and Oakland, California, providing the resort with scenic views of San Francisco Bay. The Claremont Resort opened in 1915 as the Claremont Hotel, named for the Claremont district in which it was situated. The Claremont has 279 guest rooms, an award-winning 20,000-square-foot spa, 10 tennis courts, and 22 acres of landscaped gardens.  The Hotel was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2003,and is a designated California Historical Landmark.

Oh my gosh! This wedding was the PERFECT way to kick off 2010. Sarah and Anthony are one of those couples I just get giddy about when  I meet. Stylish, young, fun and so adorably cute! Plus, they are both artists, and have a great aesthetic. Once they explained to  me the “look” they were going for, I felt really inspired. Sarah really wanted an organic, natural feel to her images. And Anthony liked the minimalist element that the Winter season provides. Where some couples (and photographers) might wish this were a Spring or Summer wedding, I loved the fact that they actually liked the Winter feel.

The day started when I met Sarah and Anthony at the Claremont Resort Hotel and Spa, which if you don’t know, is a fabulous place in Oakland, Ca. The hotel was established in 1915, and I just love the vintage feel.

From the Claremont Hotel and Spa, we went up into Tilden Park to the East Bay Regional Parks Botanic Garden, where an intimate ceremony was held. Even in the “off’ season, this garden was gorgeous, and I highly recommend a visit if you haven’t been there already.

After weeks of rain and cold weather, the sun came out this day for Sarah & Anthony.This is Anthony’s Nana, Hazel. If I could adopt her as my grandmother, it’d be a done deal!Anthony, smiling.This is the fabulous outfit of one of Anthony’s good friends. I just loved the juxtaposition of colors, patterns and texture.Topping off the outfit was the sneakers. Sweet!I LOVE the trees in the background. Sarah and Anthony were just such a pleasure to work with. I really enjoyed meeting their family and friends. Everyone was so down to earth and friendly. It’s clear, Sarah and Anthony are very loved. And, the love they have for each other is very inspiring. Sarah and Anthony’s wedding was the perfect reminder why I photograph weddings. So for that, THANK YOU, Sarah and Anthony. Located in San Francisco’s Nob Hill, the University Club has been housed in the same historic a brick building for over 102 years (since 1909). The University Club is a private, membership-based social and athletic club. But don’t worry! It also rents out several upscale event spaces on the building’s 3rd and 4th floors to non-members.

The Lounge on the building’s 4th floor welcomes guests with an expansive wall of windows that offer incredible views of the San Francisco Financial District skyline. In addition to the million dollar views, I just love that this room offers rich wood trim, vintage inspired brocade wallpaper, and intricate chandeliers. Gorgeous! Also on this floor you’ll find:

The Library Room – an intimate space which offers fine leather sofas, a fireplace, windows overlooking the city, and over 3,000 leather-bound books.

The Game Room - complete with wood-paneling, this rooms offers a pool table for guests’ enjoyment.

The Old World bar – adjacent to the Game Room, the Old World Bar is a circular room that works great as an overflow area for the ceremony, or as a space for guests to mingle during cocktail hour.

On the building’s 3rd floor, you’ll find the spacious dining room which features an exposed beam ceiling, and the Black Cat Bar, a great choice for after-dinner desserts and spirits. With such a richly appointed historical venue, how can you go wrong?

After the celebrating is done, top of the experience by inviting your closest friends & family to stay in one of the University Club’s 16 well-appointed guestrooms or suites. This is a great option for couple’s with guests from out of town, as not only is it incredibly convenient, it’s sure to leave a lasting impression!

Ok, ok. So, normally, it takes me a wee bit to get my most recent wedding images on the blog. But this wedding was just so great, I just couldn’t wait to put these up.

What can I say about Nat & Ty? They are FABulous. (I can’t believe I just used that word either, but there you have it, I did.) Working with them over the past few months has been a sincere pleasure, and I was so looking forward to photographing their big day.

The day started off with Natalie getting ready at her home in Russian Hill, with her mom and close friends by her side. Once we hailed a cab, we were off to Ina Coolbrith Park. From this cozy park you get an amazing view of the downtown skyline!

The ceremony was intimate….just under 50 close friends and family. The Blue Angels were out practicing this day, but stopped just long enough for everyone to hear the touching ceremony. I particularly liked the part where Natalie and Tyler nailed shut a wooden box, which held love letters to one another. When Natalie wiped away a tear, and then Ty followed suit, my own glasses started to fog up! I don’t think there was a dry eye in the house. (Note, photographing a wedding with foggy glasses is not advised!)

After the ceremony, there was a champagne and cigar reception, which made for some great photo fun. Then we were off to catch the sunset at San Francisco’s Aquatic Park, where Natalie often swims.(You’re brave girl….burr!!!)

This day was just beautiful, and Nat and Ty were absolutely gorgeous to photograph, as I’m sure you’ll agree.

Days like this remind me how lucky I am to have the job that I do. A big thanks goes out to Nat and Ty for making my job one that I love so dearly.

P.S. I can’t forget to give a big shout out to my assistant photographer, Diana. She captured the great, colorful shots of the boys before the ceremony.

As I began editing the photos for this wedding, I remembered something. That is, what it feels like to be in the presence of two people who have so much respect, admiration, and love for each other that it is thick in the air. Krista and Tim are one such couple. Not only did their verbal expression of their feelings for each other bring tears to my eyes, their non-verbal expression and connection touched in me a very deep way.

While every wedding I have the honor to photograph is joyful and beautiful in its own unique way, this one will hold a special place in my heart. Photographing their wedding was a great experience not only because they are a fun couple, and BoaVentura de Caires Vinyeard in Livermore, CA is a beautiful place, but also because their love for each other left me happy, energized and inspired. To Tim and Krista: thank you for choosing me as the lucky person to document your very special day!

The grounds at BoaVentura Vineyards are perfect for a wedding. Just large enough for a nice sized wedding (125 people), yet small enough for an intimate feel. And, what a great view….vineyards filed with ripening grapes and the Livermore Valley.

Yesterday I read a great blog post on Rock-n-Roll Bride about what people should expect to pay for their wedding photographer. This blog post is a MUST read for anyone about to be married as it’s a real eye opener. Here’s some food for thought:

♥ Photography is an Investment, Not an Expense. After the wedding, what’s left? The dress, the ring and YOUR MEMORIES. That’s it. This being said, the photographer is the one thing that shouldn’t be scrimped on or “DIY-ed”. These memories are your family heirloom. Why risk it?

♥ What’s Important to YOU? Weddings can be expensive. The thought of spending thousands of dollars on a photographer is a lot for some people to come to terms with. There is no hard and fast rule about what you should budget for your wedding photography. You may have heard of the 10% rule, in which 10% of your wedding budget should be allocated to your wedding photography. In reality, people have different vales and priorities. If you are a Foodie, then you’ll put more money into feeding your guests. If you are really into music, then you will splurge on great entertainment. And if you appreciate the value of good photography, then you will invest in it. So, ask yourself, what’s most important to you? Your answer is where you should put your money.

♥ Owning a Nice Camera Doesn’t Make You a Photographer. Being a photographer is not just about owning a professional camera; it’s about knowing how to USE it. Take note: not all photographers have exactly the same skill set. So, when shopping for a photographer, remember it’s not like comparing apples to apples. Our experience, products, and visual point of view are all different.

♥ Experience Counts. The more experienced a photographer is, the more he/she should cost. A wedding day is fraught with pitfalls and challenges for the inexperienced, including ever-changing lighting conditions, venue restrictions, bad weather, and grumpy guests/bridezillas. A good photographer knows how to deal with all of this.

♥ Creativity is Priceless. We’ve all seen those familiar wedding shots: Bride looking out the window. Groomsmen re-creating the scene from Reservoir Dogs. Bridal Parties jumping up in the air (why the heck are they jumping, anyways?) But, a pro will often have the skill and creativity to go beyond these standard shots to capture moments chocked full of genuine personality and emotion. And, being able to do this in high pressure situations like weddings is not an easy skill to develop.

♥ Is Your “Pro” Professional? What good is having a photographer if they are completely unprofessional? A good way to find out is to ask for referrals from people who have used the photographers you are considering. The last thing you want at your wedding is a photographer who shows up wearing jeans, barks orders at guests, is distracting during the ceremony, or goes MIA during the event to check their cell phone or Facebook.

♥ You Want “natural” Looking Photos. A good photographer has the ability to pose a couple. Don’t want to be posed you say? Trust me, you DO. Posing doesn’t have to mean stiff looking, un-natural photographs. For me, I call it ‘guiding the couple”, which basically means, I look for good light, a good background, and then bring the couple to it. I then get the couple to engage in a natural way, so I can step back and photograph. The next time you see a really lovely natural looking image, chances are the photographer helped guide the couple into that moment, that location and that light. When you can’t tell it was posed, well, THAT’s good posing. And, this takes LOTS of practice.

♥ Seeing the Light. Another thing that you pay for as prices go up is the ability to see light and knowledge of different lighting techniques. Knowing the difference between natural light and flash, and how and when to use each, is critical.

♥ Getting it Right IN the Camera. When you hire a pro, chances are they will nail the shot right in the camera, reducing the need to ‘fix’ it later in Photoshop.

♥ Knowing WHEN to use Photoshop. Want that stray hair, blemish or braces removed? Want to look a few years younger by getting rid of some wrinkles? How about a few pounds lighter? We all want to look our best, but at the low end of the market, it’s probable that wedding coverage and the disc of images you receive will not be retouched. Or, even worse, the images may be over-Photoshopped, leaving you with zombie looking eyes and flat skin and unrealistically white teeth and blue skies. A seasoned pro will know when to use Photoshop without going overboard.

♥ Service Matters. When you go into Walmart do you expect the same level of customer service and attention that you’d get at Saks? Heck no! At Walmart, you’re left to your own devices to find your way through the dizzying aisles of choices. Then, be prepared to get in line and wait with a zillion other people (and crying babies). Hopefully, your purchase won’t fall apart the same day you bought it. My point? Customer service is another thing you pay for.

♥ It’s expensive to be a photographer. Next to being a dentist, photography has one of the highest start up costs. I think PPA estimated it to be in the neck of $40,000. Yeah, that’s more than many people make in a year. It’s no wonder photographers often have a 2nd (or 3rd) job, or a spouse, helping pay the bills. Most professional wedding photographers are small businesses, run by people who made the brave decision to leave comfortable, full-time employment (ahm, me included!) to take on the challenge of working for themselves. In addition to all the equipment needed, you have to take into account the costs of  things like rent, gas, electricity, computer equipment, data back up, software, marketing, advertising, transportation, education, mortgages, food, entertainment, insurance, pensions, clothing, etc. When it all adds up, it’s darn expensive to be a photographer.

♥ But, It’s Only One Day of Work, Right??? Many people think a photographer’s fees are just for 1 day’s work and therefore hard to justify. However, I can tell that you that for me, one wedding usually involves about 42 hours of work. This includes marketing, emails/phone calls, meeting with clients, engagement shoots, shooting the wedding, downloading/archiving the images, editing & retouching, album design, printing, framing, creating slide shows, uploading online galleries, and delivery of everything to the client. Add all that time to the cost of marketing, advertising, office equipment, camera equipment, insurance, rent AND the cost of the materials to make wedding albums, prints, etc. Do the math and you’ll quickly see the photographer’s profit dwindle.

♥ She Works Hard for the Money. (Yes, that’s a Donna Summer reference!) Wedding photographers are warriors and ninjas. Seriously. They are some of the hardest working folks I’ve met. The job is both physically and mentally demanding. I liken it to doing a tri-athalon. Want to know why I take Sundays off? It’s because I’m either in bed sleeping or at the massage therapist getting my body repaired. So, before you start bargaining with your photographer on price, please remember their fee is based on their experience, artistry and cost of doing business. Rock-n-Roll Bride said it best: “The recession, the day of the week your wedding is on, the size of your guest list (e.g. “I’m having a small wedding”), and the fact that you chose to spend a large sum on your dress, doesn’t affect how much it costs your photographer to shoot your wedding.”

♥ Walmart or Saks Fifth Avenue…Where Do You Like to Shop? Whenever you make a purchase, there are a variety of brands out there for you to choose from, ranging from budget to luxe. Wedding photographers are no different. We have the equivalents of Walmart, Macy’s, and Sax Fifth Avenue. At the low end of the market, the photographers are most likely photography students, weekend warriors or newbies just starting out. Generally, these folks have very little (or no) experience and training, lack professional grade equipment, offer products that are produced more cheaply, and are still working out the kinks as they learn how to run a business. Mid-range photographers have more training & experience and generally shoot weddings more frequently. They are also more likely to have better quality, professional equipment and insurance. Their product line is often of higher quality because their fees allow them to put more resources into nicer products. Lastly, the customer experience tends to be better because they have found their ‘groove’ and are able to avoid many of the pitfalls a newbie faces. Upper range photographers are generally very experienced and well trained, use only top quality equipment, provide an incredible customer service experience and offer high end products to their clients. 

What’s the moral of the story? You get what you pay for. Every person deserves to have a good photographer on their wedding day. So, even if you don’t have the biggest of budgets, spend as much as you can reasonably afford, and find ways to save in other areas, if possible.

If you are in the process of planning a wedding, you probably quickly realized that it can be a full time job. So many things to learn, research and make decisions about! At times, it can even be a bit overwhelming.

So, Rebecca to the rescue! Below, you’ll find my Tips on Choosing a Wedding Photographer. Yes, now I know you’ll say, but I’ve already read articles on The Knot and Martha Stewart Weddings about how to pick a photographer, so I’m all set.

Well, while those resources are a good place start, my tips are offered from the perspective of an actual photographer, and gets to the heart of some very important questions that the more generic lists you’ve seen probably haven’t touched on.

So, without further adieu…..

1) Ask for Recommendations: While the internet is great, it’s overwhelming. Its seems every person with a camera now is setting up shop as a wedding photographer. How do you find the needle in the haystack? Ask friends and family for a recommendation. Nothing beats an honest, first-hand account of what a photographer was like to work with.

2) Be Wary of Review Sites: You’re probably familiar with sites like Yelp.com, the Knot, Wedding Wire and others. While these sites can be great resources, take them with a grain of salt. While many reviews are legit, some are not. And some sites, like Yelp, hide legitimate reviews from viewers. Lastly, remember that people are motivated by different reasons to leave reviews.

3) Look at the Photographers Work: While this may seem obvious, you’d be surprised how often people don’t look at the photographer’s body of work before contacting them. Your time is valuable, as is the photographer’s. So, instead of sending a mass inquiry email to several dozen photographers, take the time to familiarize yourself with their work. Ask yourself: does the work appeal to you? Does it make you emotional? Is it timeless? Can you see your wedding day being captured in this style? If so, that photographer’s work is likely to be a good match.

4) Consider Pricing: Price is probably one of the biggest concerns of most engaged couples. You may find a fantastic photographer, however if they are leagues out of your budget, you’re back to square one. Many wedding guides will tell you to set aside 10% of your budget for wedding photography. While this suggestion seems reasonable, it’s often not very realistic. Many couples who use this suggestion for pricing quickly become disappointed when they realize the handful of photographers they are interested are not within this budget.

5) Don’t Use Price as the Deciding Factor: The biggest mistake I see couples make is choosing a photographer based on price alone. Comparing photographers is often like comparing apples to oranges. Meaning, each is so different in terms of their personality, experience, approach, style and product offerings you can’t compare them fairly. Just because one photographer offers a DVD of image and their package is $500 less doesn’t necessarily mean they are the best choice.

6) Decide What’s Important to You: Different things are important to different people. Ask yourself: How much do you value photography? If a lot, then you’ll put more of your wedding budget into this expense. If you are a foodie, you might choose to put more funds aside for an amazing feast of local and organic fare. If you are big into music and entertainment, hire the best band or performance group you can afford. Remember, this is YOUR day and it’s all about what’s important to YOU.

7) At the End of the Day, What’s Left?: Like all good things, they must come to an end. When the wedding day is all said and done, what do you have left? Well, generally only a few things: the ring, the dress, and your memories. The food and cake is eaten, the flowers die, and the invitations and decorations are disposed of (hopefully, recycled). With any luck, your ring will be worn every day as a reminder of your love and commitment. The dress will most likely be put into storage, or even sold. That leaves your memories of the day……the images that are ultimately your family heirloom. When you look at it this way, you can see how important it is to not only pick the best photographer you can afford, but to think about this expense as an investment.

Now, I realize, this isn’t the typical “Check List” that you see in the other magazines. And, that’s OK. The purpose of this blog post is to get couple’s thinking about the important things NOT included on those other check lists when it comes to finding the best photographer for your wedding.

Ada and Peter are such a sweet and unique couple. So, when they asked me to photograph their wedding, I of course said “yes”! They had mentioned that the wedding ceremony and reception would be fairly casual and small, and would be held at Stafford Lake Park in Novato, CA.

Just like Ada and Peter, the wedding proved to be very colorful and unique! They were married under a beautiful canopy of trees, with their close friends playing music and showing guests to their seats (on stilts no less!)

Jamie and Mike are an incredibly fun couple, and I think it shows in their wedding photos. Their wedding was held at the lush estates of Wente Vineyards in Livermore, CA. The grounds are gorgeous, and Jamie was just stunning! I had a blast photographing them, as well as their guests, especially during the reception. This couple knows how to have a good time!
