TIPS FOR A GREAT HEADSHOT
General Clothing Guidance:
• Avoid wrinkles by ironing your items and bringing your outfit to the shoot and changing into it.
• Choose well-fitting clothes. If it’s too tight, or too baggy, best to skip it.
• Avoid clothes with logos or branding.
• Choose solid colors, over intricate patterns, small repetitive prints, plaid or anything with a sheen.
• Avoid the color red if you have a ruddy complexion or rosacea.
• If you have a light skin tone - avoid very light colors like white, cream, beige, pastels, peach or yellow, as they can make your skin tone looked washed out and pale.
• If you have a dark skin tone - avoid very dark colors like black, navy, or brown.
• If you will be photographed on a white background avoid wearing white or other very light colors. If you will be photographed on a black or dark background, avoid wearing black or very dark colors.
Female-Identified Subjects:
• For a casual look, consider a blouse or sweater.
• For a more professional look, consider adding a blazer.
• Choose half, 3/4 or full length sleeve tops.
Avoid sleeveless tops and spaghetti straps unless you have extremely toned arms.
• Consider blouses with V-, U- or scoop or cowl neck lines. Avoid turtlenecks, high necklines and ultra-low necklines (no cleavage).
• If you have noticeable tan lines, wear clothing that hides them. If you have a noticeable sunburn, it’s best to reschedule your session.
Male-Identified Subjects:
• For a casual look, consider a polo shirt, button-down shirt, or sweater.
• For a more professional look, consider adding a tie or jacket over a dress shirt.
• Ties look best when their tone lands between the suit and the shirt; a light shirt, a dark suit, and a tie in a shade somewhere between them. Avoid reflective, shiny silk ties and those with busy patterns.
• Need help picking out a shirt? Here are some of my favorite items: button down shirt, a 1/4 zip sweater, a sweater polo, or a solid color sweater with a dress shirt underneath.
• Avoid plain t-shirts and hoodies, unless you're very young and/or working in a startup.
Accessories:
• If you wear glasses and have a strong prescription - or you have Transitions or tinted lenses - , consider wearing contacts rather than glasses. We will NOT be able to fix darkness caused by Transitions lenses.
• If you have glasses with anti-blue light tinting, consider wearing a different pair of glasses or contacts. These coatings can cause your lenses to look blue or purple. We will NOT be able to fix this color cast.
• If you choose to wear jewelry, keep it simple. Choose something small, classic, and non-reflective or flashy.
• Avoid anything too “busy”, such as: glitter, patent leather, shiny fabrics, sweaters with large knit patterns, ruffles, bows, ribbons, sequins, and gemstones.
Make Up:
• Consider using a professional make up artist. This will help ensure your skin tone is even, matte and any imperfections like blemishes, discoloration and wrinkles are concealed.
• Avoid heavy make up, caked on foundation, shiny eye shadow, lip gloss, ultra dark eyes, or bright red lips. Stick to one or two shades darker than your normal skin tone for eyes, cheeks and lips.
• Be sure your foundation color matches your neck and décolletage.
• Bring along extra lip color and powder/oil absorbing tissues to help keep your complexion matte.
• Avoid moisturizer or foundation with SPF as this can create shine.
Hair:
• Stick with the hair style that you normally wear. Don’t cut or dye your hair right before the shoot. Freshly colored hair can look too vibrant and unnatural. A new haircut also Looks its best after at least a week, and colored hair looks more natural after 1-2 weeks’ worth of shampooing.
• Be clean-shaven or have facial hair neatly trimmed. If prone to skin irritation, shave the night before.
Teeth:
• If you are a smoker, or a coffee/tea drinker, consider whitening your teeth in advance of your photo session.
ETC:
• When in doubt, bring a few extra clothing pieces so we can choose what looks best when you arrive.
• Avoid drinking alcohol or smoking. Drink plenty of water and get a good night’s sleep the night before your session. You’ll look younger, brighter and healthier!
